Dr. Renae Ekstrand, associate professor of education, began teaching at Dickinson State University in 2011. She has taught courses on early childhood education, teaching methods for elementary language arts and social studies, educational psychology and assessment, classroom management, and children’s literature, Pre-K-12 early school field experiences, and elementary school field experiences.

In 2016 Dr. Ekstrand served as Candidate Advancement Coordinator for the Department of Teacher Education and in 2017 she began serving as the department’s co-chair.

Dr. Ekstrand began her career in education as a sign language interpreter and then as an early childhood, elementary and middle school teacher. While teaching at the pre-k-middle school level she was an adjunct faculty member at Hamline University and Wisconsin Indianhead Technical College where she taught various early childhood, elementary, and general education courses. Dr. Ekstrand has also been a full-time tenure-track faculty member of the education departments at South Dakota State University, Augsburg University, and the University of Wisconsin-Stout.

Dr. Ekstrand’s research and creative interests include teacher preparation and induction, teacher dispositions, teaching efficacy, teacher and student sense of belonging, culturally responsive teaching, and children’s literature.
