Hawks Snatched Before They Fly the Nest
Barely into their pre-service teaching experience, two DSU Teacher Education students have already signed teaching contracts for the 2014-15 academic year.
JL Garman (below, left) is completing his pre-service teaching experience at Dickinson High School. In January, he accepted a position to teach science at Watford City beginning in the fall. Those who have seen JL interact with his students are not surprised he was so quickly signed, stating that he "does a wonderful job [and] will make an excellent teacher!" JL is not the only Hawk joining the Watford City faculty next year. His wife, Mandy Garman, and Jerome Hoffman (both fall 2013 DSU graduates) have signed contracts to teach physical education for the district.
Nathan Amberg (above, right) is completing his pre-service teaching experience at Trinity High School. He signed a contract in February to teach English at Dickinson High School next year. Faculty note that, "Nathan's enthusiasm is barely contained—he is so excited about joining DHS. He will be great for the students."
While our job placement rate is generally high with recent graduates solidifying employment shortly after graduation, the recruitment that has occurred of current pre-service teachers is unprecedented. Several other candidates due to graduate this May have been interviewing at the request of area superintendents. It is likely more from this cohort will have their first teaching job secured while they are still officially students.
