At Dickinson State University, each residence hall room is equipped for a land line telephone. You will need to purchase a telephone for your room. Telephones can be purchased inexpensively at Wal-Mart or K-mart. The more features you choose (caller I.D. or voice mail) the more you can expect to pay. When you use your land line, your local calls are free, but calls outside the area can get expensive. If you choose to use your land line, consider purchasing a calling card with competitive international and long distance rates.
Mobile phones, or cell phone as they are commonly known in the USA, are a communications alternative available to students if you do not already have a compatible mobile phone to bring with you. There are many mobile phone options available to you, however they can range from very cheap to the very expensive so you need to shop around and find the best deal for you.
There are two main types of mobile phones that you can get, contract mobile phones and prepaid mobile phones which are also known as "pay as you go" phones. Contract phone are attractive as they generally provide the phone for free, and give you good calling rates, however unless you have a good credit history and permanent residency you will not be able to get a contract phone.
Prepaid phones are therefore your best option and although you have to buy the phone, this will be yours for life. With a prepaid plan, you purchase a number of minutes from the company you choose and you can use your phone until you run out of minutes. You can reload your minutes as you wish.
Dickinson has several businesses selling prepaid phones.
