Career Options

Society is always changing, and there are limitless opportunities for you to enter a profession that helps improve the quality of life.

The social science degree is a great option if you are planning for a future career in law, economics, politics, public administration, urban planning, or gerontology. In addition, the social sciences offer valuable preparation for careers specializing in family health, environmental issues, sports, the military, law enforcement, or criminal justice.

Job prospects for social science graduates are excellent. Teaching at the elementary or secondary level is the goal of those who attain a Bachelor of Science degree in education, and this degree can be used as a steppingstone to university level teaching if you pursue an advanced degree.

If you graduate with a degree in history, you may choose to go into law, government service, the diplomatic corps, journalism, tourism, or museum or archival work.

Historians also are actively recruited by publishing firms, historic societies, research organizations, and libraries.

As a social work graduate, you can pursue a career in adoption, childcare, counseling, recreation, or juvenile issues. You can also work with probation and parole, government agencies, family and youth services, hospital social services, labor unions, social service agencies, and housing authorities. Other possibilities include working with regional planning councils, services to the elderly, substance abuse programs, services to the handicapped, mental health centers, and protective services for children and senior citizens. A growing number of social worker positions are also opening private practices.

The psychology program prepares you for careers in various areas, including social services agencies, the criminal justice system, hospitals, clinics, and other mental health organizations. The psychology program is also perfect if you are wanting to prepare for graduate study in theoretical or applied psychology.

Extracurricular Programs

The Science and Humanities Festival at DSU involves a collaborative group of scholars, teachers, researchers, and people excited about examining the intersections between diverse topics. The richest academic ideas emerge from an interdisciplinary approach.

By drawing on the talent and resources of educators from across the state, the Science and Humanities Festival creates a space for history and science to be celebrated in a way that is appealing to an academic and general audience. The atmosphere of the festival invites dialogue between scholars and the public. All presentations include time to respond to questions and create connections with the audience.

Exploring different disciplines enables attendees to examine subjects from a wider perspective than ever before.
