No Gimmicks

Dickinson State University. No gimmicks. Real Faculty. Affordable Tuition.

Do not fall for gimmicks! Enroll in the right school for you.

As you navigate the exciting journey of exploring your higher education options, it's crucial to arm yourself with knowledge and discernment to avoid falling for recruiter gimmicks. While college recruiters may employ various tactics to attract students, it's essential to approach their offers with a critical eye and a healthy dose of skepticism. Here are a few tips to help you stay informed:

Do Your Research

Take the time to thoroughly research each college you're considering. Look beyond flashy brochures and campus tours to gather information about academic programs, faculty, campus resources, and student outcomes. Talk with current students to get the real story.

Consider how long it will take you to graduate, and if your institution can offer you the pathways you desire. Research career and internship opportunities in the area of your institution. Don’t fall for the aesthetics, activities, and nightlife, as your focus will be significantly focused on school. Some institutions mark up the cost of attendance based on their city’s amenities alone, so be sure to understand if that is the case at your institution.

Beware of Empty Promises

Be cautious of recruiters who make lofty promises or guarantees, especially regarding scholarships, financial aid, or job placement rates. Remember that if something sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

Private schools often engage in these tactics to hide high costs of attendance. If you are being offered a $15,000 scholarship towards $30,000 in tuition costs per year, you are still “spending” as much as you “save.”  Beware of “match” programs, as these usually result in you losing more money than you save.

As a possible example, assume a private school sent you an advertisement like this:

Fake ad featuring a pirate witha sorcerers hat. Text reads Sorcerer-Pirate scholarship. Reduce your tuition to our local two-year college's rate. Apply today for this once-in-a-lifetime scholarship! fakead.com/apply/but-actually-dont

At first glance, this looks great. But when you look into this further, it is likely that Dickinson State University’s low tuition plus academic scholarship will cost you less than this “gimmick.”

The DSU Difference

Institution Tuition Fees** Total DSU "Difference"
DSU $3,735.00   $824.16   $4,559.16

Example based on 15 credits.

Again, at first glance, it looks like the private school is a less expensive option. But keep looking! If you have been a successful student, DSU will provide you with an automatic scholarship that will make it the less expensive option (as long as you continue to succeed academically).

Also, though DSU allows you to access courses remotely, it does not require you to take them remotely/online to receive an academic scholarship.

Ask Tough Questions

Don't be afraid to ask recruiters tough questions about accreditation, graduation rates, student-to-faculty ratios, and campus culture. A reputable institution will be transparent and forthcoming with this information. Ask about how many full-time faculty you should expect during your time studying at the institution. Ask to talk to current students and alumni learn from their experiences.

Be wary of institutions that use an excessive number of graduate assistants or teaching assistants from graduate programs to provide classroom instruction. Occasional high-quality adjuncts or part-time instruction from industry professionals is acceptable, but programs should have solid university instruction from faculty to provide the value you deserve.

Look Beyond the Surface

Don't let superficial factors like campus aesthetics or celebrity endorsements sway your decision. Focus on what truly matters to you, such as academic quality, extracurricular opportunities, and the overall fit with your educational and career goals.

Large institutions will offer promises of attending events or athletics but fail to mention that you may have to pay for this access, or that access is limited. Look and understand how small institutions, especially public schools, must back up guarantees.

Trust Your Instincts

Listen to your gut instincts when interacting with college recruiters. If something feels off or overly pushy, it's okay to step back and reassess your options.

Also, realize that your choice is not forever. It is okay to start at an institution and transfer to a better fit. It is okay to leave a private institution or a large school for a smaller, more personalized school that meets your academic and athletic goals.

Remember, choosing the right college is a significant decision that will shape your future. By staying informed, asking the right questions, and trusting your instincts, you can avoid falling for recruiter gimmicks and make a well-informed choice that aligns with your aspirations and values.
