If I am not a North Dakota resident, can I still pursue an online degree from Dickinson State?

Yes! If you live outside of North Dakota you are able to complete your degree online. However, due to certain state regulations, we are not able to offer our programs to all states. Please check our DSU State Authorization web page for an updated list of states we are authorized to deliver our programs to.

What computer equipment do I need to take an online course through DSU?

Generally, any newer computer with an updated operating system can be used for online courses. For more specific details, information can be found on our DSU Online page.

Are there student support services available for online students?

Yes! As a distance education student you will have access to assistance all the way from the admission process through graduation, including an array of software designed specifically for you as an online student. You also have access to an experienced point-of-contact person for general questions in regards to your college experience along with a faculty advisor in your chosen field of study.

How much time do online courses take and when do they begin?

You should set aside approximately 3-5 hours per credit each week to study for your online courses. It is recommended that you log into your course via Blackboard every 2-3 days to stay up to date with any online discussions as well as to check for any new course materials or communication from your fellow classmates or instructors.

Online courses at Dickinson State follow the regular semester schedule. They are available for access by 3:00 p.m. MT on the first day of class.

How are exams completed in online courses?

Most exams are completed by you on your home computer during a predetermined time frame. However, some exams must be completed in a proctored environment. This means you will need to find an approved proctor to oversee the completion of your exam. This is done to ensure the integrity of the course and programs. More information regarding proctored exam procedures can be found on our Proctor Policy page.

Do I earn a diploma, and can I participate in a graduation ceremony?

Yes! You earn your diploma and you are able to participate in either the fall or spring commencement ceremonies held on campus each year. Specific details regarding graduation ceremonies can be found by visiting our Academic Records page.

Are there any additional program/institutional exams I need to complete to receive my diploma?

Prior to receiving your diploma, all DSU students must complete an Exit Exam. Depending on your program of study, the exam may be specific to your program or the exam may be a general proficiency exam. These exams must be proctored and diplomas will not be sent out until these exams have been completed. Proctoring details can be found on the Proctor Policy page and exam details can be found on the Testing Center page.
