Program History

Established in 1969, the Dickinson State University nursing program has a long-standing history of preparing compassionate, skilled nurses to meet the evolving needs of healthcare. As the healthcare landscape continues to change, DSU has remained committed to adapting its programs to best serve students and the surrounding rural communities. In response to workforce demands, the program transitioned from an Associate of Applied Science in Practical Nursing (AASPN) to a Practical Nursing (PN) certificate program in 2026. This allows students to complete their education more efficiently and enter the workforce sooner. The intentional shift helps address critical healthcare needs in rural settings while continuing DSU’s tradition of excellence in nursing education. DSU also offers a comprehensive Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) Program for students to gain valuable nursing skills in specialized areas of care, along with further leadership and research skills. This degree can be a steppingstone for students who have goals for advancement within the nursing profession.

The Dickinson State University nursing program is deeply grateful for the continued support of our community healthcare partners. Through these valued partnerships, students are provided with high-quality clinical and learning experiences that enhance classroom instruction and prepare them for real-world nursing practices. Our partners play a vital role in shaping student success by offering mentorship, hands-on training, and exposure to diverse healthcare settings. Together, we are committed to strengthening the local healthcare workforce and supporting the health needs of our rural communities.
