Dickinson State University is pleased to announce that Stephanie Gerving has joined its nursing faculty, bringing a wealth of professional experience, a passion for education, and a dedication to shaping the next generation of nurses.
A native of Beach, North Dakota, Gerving’s journey in healthcare began with her studies at the University of North Dakota before she transferred to complete her Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) certification. She later earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Mary. Her professional experience includes working as a registered nurse in Dickinson, where she served as a float nurse, gaining experience in various areas such as dermatology and maternal-fetal medicine. Prior to her time in Dickinson, Stephanie worked at a family medicine clinic in Fargo, specializing in women’s and children’s health.
Gerving’s path to academia is rooted in her love for learning and teaching. “Knowledge is a precious thing that is meant to be shared,” she says. “I’ve always believed in not just telling people what to do but educating them on the why and empowering them to think critically. By teaching others, I hope to inspire them to share their knowledge as well.”
Currently pursuing her Master of Science in Nursing, Gerving is excited to refine her skills in both nursing and teaching. “This journey is about more than formal instruction. It’s about learning how to engage students in a meaningful way, teach beyond the lecture, and create an environment where information truly resonates,” she explains. “I look forward to those moments when I meet a student who needs me to adapt my teaching strategy. That’s when I’ll know I’ve truly arrived as an educator.”
Gerving’s enthusiasm for her students’ success is palpable. She envisions the pride she’ll feel when her first cohort walks across the stage at graduation. “It will be like a proud mom moment,” she shares. “It’s bittersweet, but I’ll know I’ve helped prepare them for the big world of nursing.”
A mother of five and married to Dr. Mathew Gerving, an internal medicine physician with Sanford Health of Dickinson, Stephanie Gerving balances her professional commitments with family life. She finds joy in the outdoors, glamping in her camper, and spending time with her extended family—including being part of a large family of ten siblings that have generated 32 grandchildren.
Gerving’s personal philosophy, “It’s not easy, just do it,” reflects her gritty attitude towards the field of nursing. She is eager to work with her students to navigate challenges and achieve success together.
Dickinson State University is excited to welcome Stephanie Gerving to its nursing faculty, where her expertise and enthusiasm will undoubtedly make an impact.
