Dickinson State University (DSU) launched the 2025–2026 academic year by underscoring its commitment to instructional excellence, as all full-time contracted faculty successfully completed Quality Matters (QM) training on August 19–20.

Nearly 60 faculty members participated in 6 to 8 hours of training led by a certified Quality Matters instructor. The professional development focused on best practices for measuring course quality, improving accessibility, incorporating diverse teaching methods, and fostering student engagement across all formats of course delivery.

The training is part of DSU’s strategic plan initiatives to advance teaching and learning, and to provide measurable improvements in student success.

Dr. Holly Gruhlke, Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost, participated in the training alongside the faculty. “As faculty, we share a responsibility to continually improve how we serve our students,” said Dr. Gruhlke. “Participating in this training together set a powerful tone for the year. It ensures we are not only advancing academic quality but also staying true to our mission of preparing students for success in a dynamic world.”

President Scott Molander emphasized the importance of the training in providing benchmarks for instructional growth. “Quality Matters provides a nationally recognized framework for measuring and enhancing instruction,” said President Molander. “This training gives us valuable data points and benchmarks that allow us to make measurable improvements in teaching and learning, ensuring we deliver the highest quality educational experience possible.”

By investing in professional development through Quality Matters, Dickinson State University reinforces its commitment to excellence in instruction, faculty growth, and the success of its students. Another professional development event is being planned for the spring, and the institution plans to form a committee lead by faculty, instructional designers, and academic administration dedicated to monitoring and improving instruction.
