Carl Askins has always had a curiosity for how the world works. Growing up in Sheridan, Wyoming, he spent his time launching homemade rockets, digging for dinosaur bones and collecting rocks. That early love for science and math eventually led him to Dickinson State University, where he’s now entering his senior year as a chemistry major with a pre-pharmacy emphasis.

“When I visited DSU, it immediately felt like home,” he said. “The tight-knit community reminded me of Sheridan, and I liked how easy it was to connect with people on campus.”

The sense of community, paired with affordability and strong academic programs, made DSU the perfect fit.

Since arriving on campus, Askins has embraced a wide range of opportunities. He serves as a resident assistant in DeLong Hall, is a member of the Science Club, part of the Theodore Roosevelt Honors Leadership Program and competes on the track and field team.

He credits much of his growth to the people who have supported him along the way. His coach, Shayne Wittkopp, has been a consistent source of encouragement, both in athletics and in life. He also highlights Dr. Jinasena Hewage, his primary chemistry professor and research mentor, for guiding him through an in-depth research project on phytochemicals.

Outside the classroom and the lab, it’s the simple, everyday moments that have made a lasting impact. One of his favorite memories is heading to the cafeteria after track practice with friends — an ordinary routine that became something special.

“I’m really grateful for the opportunities I’ve had here at DSU — from academics and leadership to athletics and research. It’s been an incredible environment for growth, and I’m excited for what’s ahead.”

With a passion for learning and a strong foundation built through experience and mentorship, Askins is looking forward to the next chapter, bringing with him a Blue Hawk spirit shaped by both meaningful work and unforgettable moments.
