DICKINSON, N.D. — August 3, 2026 — Dickinson State University (DSU) has announced a leadership transition within its School of Education as longtime Dean Dr. Joan Aus prepares to return to the faculty and Amy Grinsteinner assumes the role of dean beginning this fall.
After six years of leadership, Aus will transition to a full-time faculty appointment while continuing to serve as DSU's director of graduate studies. University leaders expressed gratitude for her contributions to the institution and the lasting impact she has made on students, faculty and educational partners throughout the region.
During her tenure as dean, Aus led a period of significant growth and expansion for the School of Education. Under her leadership, DSU secured approval for four new graduate programs, increasing the university's graduate offerings to six programs. She also spearheaded efforts to gain approval for the university's Master of Science in Athletic Training program, which is currently under development.
In addition to expanding academic opportunities, Aus helped strengthen the school's enrollment strategy and broadened access to educational programs across eastern Montana and western North Dakota. Her work reinforced DSU's commitment to serving rural communities and supporting workforce needs throughout the region.
Stepping into the dean's role is Amy Grinsteinner, a longtime member of the DSU community who most recently served as assistant dean of education and director of assessment. Her experience in K-12 administration and higher education leadership has helped strengthen academic programs while maintaining strong connections with regional school districts and education partners.
"Amy is a Blue Hawk through and through," said DSU President Holly Gruhlke. "Her passion for education, commitment to student success and deep understanding of our mission position her well to lead the School of Education into its next chapter."
Grinsteinner holds a Master of Education in Educational Leadership from North Dakota State University, a Bachelor of Science in Social Studies Teacher Education from Minnesota State University Moorhead and a Bachelor of Arts in History from the University of Notre Dame.
As dean, Grinsteinner will oversee one of DSU's largest academic schools, which offers nationally accredited teacher education programs and prepares future educators, healthcare professionals, counselors and leaders through undergraduate and graduate study. The School of Education plays a vital role in addressing workforce needs throughout western North Dakota and eastern Montana.
"We are confident Amy will continue to build on the strong foundation established by Dr. Aus while advancing opportunities for students, faculty and community partners," Gruhlke said.
The leadership transition will take effect at the start of the 2026-27 academic year.
