DICKINSON, N.D. (Sept. 21, 2022) – Dickinson State’s Department of Health and Physical Education and Recreation (HPER) is changing its name to the School of Kinesiology (SoK). The primary purpose of the change was to make the department title more inclusive, unified, and applicable to all students’ majors, certificates, and career goals.

“The School of Kinesiology has worked to create niches to distinguish itself,” stated Holly Gruhlke, dean of College of Education, Business, and Applied Sciences. “This retitling allows for SoK to develop a brand which focuses on attracting outstanding scholars and growing its vibrant new Master of Sport Administration and Health Education programs, while continuing its efforts in Physical Education and Exercise Science.”

The newly named school will continue to nurture and grow the development of excellence within undergraduate physical education and exercise science, as well as graduate programs.

"We are excited about the direction of the School of Kinesiology," shared Thadd O'Donnell, DSU’s chair of SoK. "We have excellent faculty and solid programs that meet the needs of our region."

The School of Kinesiology’s mission will remain the same: to foster the development of dedicated, enthusiastic, and reflective educators who serve our region and the country in the promotion of healthy, active lifestyles in the holistic approach of educated the mind and body.
