Dickinson State University (DSU) has been officially recognized by the 2025 Carnegie Classification and the American Council on Education (ACE) as a Professions-Focused Baccalaureate Small Institution. This new classification framework reflects a more accurate and current representation of the higher education landscape in the United States. Based on data from the 2020–2023 academic years submitted to the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS), the classification groups institutions by degree type, academic focus, and size. Designed to be descriptive, this system supports research, strategic planning, and broader analysis across the sector.

In addition, DSU has received a Higher Access, Medium Earnings designation under the 2025 Student Access and Earnings Classification. This new evaluation model considers how well institutions serve diverse student populations and how graduates perform economically eight years after entry. Drawing from IPEDS, the U.S. Department of Education’s College Scorecard, and U.S. Census Bureau data, the classification evaluates access through Pell Grant participation and enrollment of underrepresented students, while earnings are contextualized using local demographic and economic data.

“DSU’s recognition as a higher access, medium earning institution highlights our dedication to preparing students for meaningful careers, especially in fields like education,” said Holly Gruhlke, Vice President of Academic Affairs and Provost. “We’re proud to provide accessible, high-quality education that empowers graduates to make a real impact while earning wages that support their lifestyles.”

In the Carnegie Classification’s Economic Mobility Index framework, a designation of "Higher Access, Medium Earnings" refers to an institution that enrolls a relatively high proportion of students from low-income backgrounds—often indicated by a significant percentage of Pell Grant recipients—while producing moderate post-graduation earnings for its graduates. This classification highlights schools that provide access to students who may come from historically underserved communities and offer a solid return on investment in terms of economic outcomes. Although graduates may not earn the highest salaries compared to those from more elite institutions, the earnings are still above average for institutions serving similar populations. As a result, "Higher Access, Medium Earnings" schools play an important role in promoting social and economic mobility for their students.

These classifications affirm DSU’s ongoing mission to serve its community by expanding access to education and equipping students with the tools they need for long-term success in their careers.
