The countdown is on. Before you know it, you’ll be moving into your new home at Dickinson State University (DSU). Whether you’ve already started organizing or you’re still soaking up summer, now is a great time to think about what to pack.

To help make move-in day smooth and stress-free, here’s a quick guide on what to bring, what’s allowed, and what should stay behind.

What to Bring
These are your everyday essentials and the things you’ll want as soon as you arrive on campus.

  • Clothes (bring layers; North Dakota weather is full of surprises)
  • Hangers
  • A fan
  • Twin XL sheets, pillows, and bedding
  • Towels and washcloths
  • Surge protector (not an extension cord)
  • 3M removable mounting squares for wall decor
  • Laundry detergent (bonus: DSU offers free laundry facilities)
  • Shower caddy and toiletries

Things You Can Bring
You’re welcome to personalize your space with a few extras to make your room feel like home.

  • Laptop or desktop computer
  • Refrigerator (5 cubic feet or smaller, one per room)
  • Microwave (one per room)
  • TV
  • Area rug
  • Mattress topper
  • Desk or floor lamp

What to Leave at Home
Some things just don’t belong in the residence halls. For your safety and comfort, please leave these at home.

  • Candles and candle warmers
  • Couches and love seats (your room is cozy, not a lounge)
  • Space heaters
  • Alcohol or alcohol-related items
  • Toasters, air fryers, or anything with an open heating element
  • Extension cords (stick to surge protectors)

Packing doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Stick to this list and you’ll be all set for a great start at DSU. We can’t wait to welcome you to campus and see how you make your space your own.
