Dickinson State University (DSU) celebrated the formal investiture of President Scott Molander during a ceremony held Wednesday, September 24, 2025, in May Hall’s Dorothy Stickney Auditorium.
The event was attended by numerous distinguished guests who shared in celebrating Molander’s leadership and vision for the future of DSU.
Gerard Hanson, a childhood friend of Molander, spoke at the ceremony, reminiscing about their shared upbringing in Crosby, N.D., where they spent time together on family farms, participating in sports, and enjoying the bonds of family and friendship. "It was an honor to celebrate this notable occasion with him," Hanson remarked.
Larry Havlik met Scott in Chicago at their first job out of college, and over the past 20 years, they’ve had the opportunity to work together on and off. Back then, Havlik never imagined Molander would become a university president, but today he couldn’t be prouder. “It’s an honor to be part of this ceremony and to support him as he begins this next chapter,” Havlik said.
North Dakota Commissioner of Higher Education Brent Sanford, representing the North Dakota University System (NDUS), also delivered remarks during the investiture ceremony, stating, “Today we celebrate not just the investiture of President Molander, but the reaffirmation of a vision. President Molander brings to Dickinson State University a leadership rooted in innovation and a deep commitment to student success. In a time when higher education must adapt and inspire, he stands ready to guide this institution with clarity and courage. Under his stewardship, I believe DSU will meet the challenges ahead and shape the future of this region and beyond.”
Danita Bye, a member of the State Board of Higher Education (SBHE), represented the board at the event and congratulated Molander on his new role. “In western North Dakota, we are blessed with a rare convergence of greatness — Dickinson State University, a beacon of academic excellence and leadership development; Theodore Roosevelt National Park, a living testament to resilience and conservation; and soon, the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library, a center for civic reflection and bold vision,” said Bye. “Today, as we invest President Molander with the leadership of DSU, we recognize a steward who understands the power of place and the promise of people. His strategic vision along with his commitment to cultivating leaders will echo across our state and nation. Under his guidance, DSU can be a national treasure that will shape character, inspire action, and elevate the frontier spirit that defines North Dakota."
Holly Gruhlke, DSU Vice President of Academic Affairs and Provost, oversaw the event, sharing, “It was an honor to serve as emcee for this historic occasion at Dickinson State University. Today’s investiture ceremony not only celebrates President Molander’s leadership but also reaffirms our collective commitment to advancing DSU’s mission, vision, and values. The enthusiasm and support shown by our campus community, alumni, and distinguished guests reflect the confidence we all share in President Molander’s ability to lead DSU into a bright and promising future.”
Following the ceremony, guests were invited to a social at the DSU Student Center, where they continued to honor President Molander and his new role at the university.
The marked a pivotal moment in Dickinson State University’s history, highlighting President Molander’s unwavering commitment and passion for the university and its community.
