A redshirt junior from Stockton, California, Jose Gonzalez is double majoring in computer science and mathematics while competing on the Dickinson State University (DSU) wrestling team. He said growing up in a rough neighborhood pushed him to seek opportunities for something more, which he found through wrestling.
Gonzalez’s interest in programming and artificial intelligence, along with a desire for long-term financial security, drove him toward computer science. Guidance from math teachers and a goal of coaching wrestling prompted him to add mathematics as a second major, providing a career option with the flexibility to train athletes in the future.
He chose DSU after connecting with head wrestling coach Justin Schlecht, whom he said valued him as a person rather than just an athlete. “I want to train in a room that demands excellence on and off the mat, and that the room be dedicated to me as I am to it,” he said.
In addition to wrestling, Gonzalez serves as a resident assistant in Selke Hall and as a team captain, roles he said strengthened his leadership skills and sense of community. “I strongly believe that putting yourself out there, especially somewhere new, may be intimidating but rewarding,” he said.
This year challenged Gonzalez to balance academics, athletics and life away from home. “I built structure and discipline here at DSU,” Gonzalez said, adding that the challenges ultimately strengthened his ambition and prepared him for his future goals. “All the ups and downs at DSU were necessary to get closer to the version of myself I want to be.”
As he continues his time at DSU, Gonzalez said he plans to apply his education to a career in computer science while staying involved in wrestling. He said the experiences he gained through academics, leadership, and competition have helped prepare him for life after college and the responsibilities that come with it.
