DICKINSON, N.D. — Dickinson State University (DSU) proudly celebrated the outstanding achievements and contributions of its faculty and staff at the 2026 Faculty and Staff Service Awards ceremony, held Thursday, May 14, in the DSU Student Center Ballroom. The event honored individuals across several categories, including Distinguished Educator of the Year, Innovative Teacher of the Year, Professional Contributions Award, Excellence in Teaching Award, Adjunct Faculty Recognition Award, Physical Plant Staff Service Award, Professional Staff Service Award and Administrative Staff Service Award.

“The Faculty and Staff Service Awards highlight the exceptional dedication and talent of the individuals who make Dickinson State University such a special place,” said Scott Molander, President. “Our faculty and staff continue to go above and beyond in service to students and the university community, and we are proud to recognize their outstanding contributions.”

The 2026 Faculty and Staff Service Awards ceremony reflected DSU’s continued commitment to recognizing excellence, innovation and service across campus. Through their leadership, scholarship and dedication to student success, this year’s honorees represent the very best of Dickinson State University.

“Our faculty and staff play a vital role in shaping the educational experience and success of our students,” said Dr. Holly Gruhlke, Vice President of Academic Affairs and Provost. “The individuals recognized this year demonstrate an extraordinary commitment to excellence through their teaching, mentorship, leadership and service. Distinguished Educator of the Year

Dr. Ayodeji Arogundade, Dean of the School of Business and Entrepreneurship and Professor of Business

Dr. Ayodeji Arogundade was selected as the Distinguished Educator of the Year for 2026. Through his leadership, scholarship and service, Arogundade has made a significant and lasting impact on Dickinson State University.

As dean of the School of Business and Entrepreneurship, he has strengthened academic programs, advanced institutional priorities and enriched the educational experience for students across campus. An accomplished and internationally recognized scholar, Arogundade brings a dynamic global perspective to both the classroom and university leadership. His commitment to academic excellence, innovation and student success continues to elevate DSU and its mission.

Innovative Teacher of the Year

Nick Lacher, Diesel Technology Instructor

Nick Lacher was named the Innovative Teacher of the Year for his leadership in launching Dickinson State University’s new Diesel Technology program. Lacher played an instrumental role in building both the curriculum and hands-on learning environment from the ground up, transforming an empty space into a state-of-the-art learning lab that provides students with valuable real-world experience from day one.

Beyond the classroom, Lacher is known for the time and care he invests in his students, ensuring they feel confident, supported and prepared for success in the workforce. Through innovation, leadership and an unwavering commitment to student learning, Lacher embodies the spirit of this award.

Professional Contributions Award

Dr. Michael Cullinane, Lowman Walton Chair of Theodore Roosevelt Studies

Dr. Michael Cullinane received the Professional Contributions Award for his exceptional scholarly achievement, public engagement and leadership in the field of history. Through his research, publications and public scholarship, Cullinane has elevated Dickinson State University’s reputation on both a national and international level.

In addition to his academic contributions, Cullinane has helped bring history to broader audiences through media appearances, public speaking and leadership roles with organizations including the Theodore Roosevelt Association and the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library. His scholarship and professional leadership have made a lasting impact on both his discipline and the university.

Excellence in Teaching Award

Jeri Braunagel, Director of Field Experiences and Assistant Professor in Teacher Education

Jeri Braunagel received the Excellence in Teaching Award for her outstanding commitment to preparing future educators through meaningful instruction, mentorship and hands-on learning experiences.

Her leadership in building strong partnerships with local schools and supporting student teachers has strengthened the Teacher Education program and helped ensure students leave Dickinson State prepared, confident and ready to make a difference in the classroom. Braunagel’s dedication to student success and excellence in teaching has made a lasting impact on both her students and the university.

Adjunct Faculty Recognition Award

Dr. Jason Abate, Adjunct Professor of Business

Dr. Jason Abate received the Adjunct Faculty Recognition Award for his engaging and highly practical approach to teaching. By bringing real-world business experience directly into the classroom, Abate helps students connect academic concepts with professional decision-making in meaningful and career-focused ways.

Through his dedication to student success, innovative instruction and ability to bridge theory with practice, Abate has made a lasting impact on business education at Dickinson State University.

Physical Plant Staff Service Award

Gavin Haas, Physical Plant Staff

Gavin Haas was honored with the Physical Plant Staff Service Award for his outstanding service and commitment to the campus community. Over the past year, Haas has demonstrated tremendous growth in both leadership and customer service while consistently going above and beyond to support departments, events and campus projects.

His strong work ethic, reliability and willingness to help wherever needed have made a meaningful impact across campus.

Professional Staff Service Award

Ashley Tillman, Assistant Dean of Student Support

Ashley Tillman received the Professional Staff Service Award for her unwavering dedication to supporting Dickinson State students and helping connect them with the resources and guidance they need to succeed.

In her role within Student Success and now as Assistant Dean, Tillman consistently balances leadership, advocacy and student support with professionalism and compassion. Whether assisting students through personal or academic challenges, supporting faculty or leading retention and student success initiatives, she approaches every situation with care and commitment. Her work has made a lasting difference in the lives of countless students and strengthened the DSU campus community in meaningful ways.

Administrative Staff Service Award

Betsy Murphy, Office Manager for Intercollegiate Athletics

Betsy Murphy received the Administrative Staff Service Award in recognition of her professionalism, reliability and unwavering dedication to Dickinson State University and Intercollegiate Athletics. Through her strong organizational skills, attention to detail and willingness to support others, Murphy helps ensure the daily operations of the department run smoothly and efficiently.

Known for her positive attitude and approachable nature, Murphy consistently goes above and beyond in service to students, coaches and colleagues alike. Her commitment to excellence and support of the DSU community have made a meaningful and lasting impact across campus.

Tim Daniel, Faculty Emeritus

Tim Daniel devoted 36 years to Dickinson State University as a respected professor, mentor and coach whose impact reached far beyond the classroom and athletic field. Throughout his career, he demonstrated an unwavering commitment to students and student-athletes, helping guide and support generations of Blue Hawks both academically and personally. His dedication, leadership and lasting contributions to DSU have left a meaningful legacy that will continue to be felt for years to come.

Sagar Kondru, Staff Emeritus

Sagar Kondru dedicated 21 years of service to Dickinson State University through his work in Information Technology. Known for his intelligence, professionalism and problem-solving abilities, Kondru was always willing to lend a helping hand and support others with patience and positivity. His technical expertise, strong work ethic and commitment to serving the campus community made him an invaluable colleague and trusted resource across DSU.

Daniel Walters, Staff Emeritus

Daniel Walters dedicated 18 years of service to Dickinson State University through his work in Facilities. Throughout his time at DSU, he was known for his reliability, strong work ethic and willingness to help wherever needed. His dedication and commitment to supporting the campus community played an important role in maintaining the welcoming environment that students, faculty, staff and visitors enjoy every day.
