DICKINSON, N.D. — Dickinson State University is proud to announce Shaydin Ell and Natalie Lile as the 2026 Outstanding Graduate nominees for the School of Applied Sciences. The award recognizes students who demonstrate exceptional academic achievement, leadership and commitment to the DSU community.

“Natalie and Shaydin represent the very best of our university,” said Dr. Liz Freedman Fowler, dean of the School of Applied Sciences. “They have not only excelled in rigorous scientific and agricultural programs but have also left a lasting mark on our campus through their leadership and service.”

Shaydin Ell: A pillar of leadership and positivity

Shaydin Ell

Shaydin Ell, of Mandan, graduates with a Bachelor of Science in agricultural studies with an emphasis in business and marketing and a minor in leadership studies.

Known for her positivity and strong work ethic, Ell has been a driving force behind the success of the DSU Range Club and Ag Club. Serving as treasurer for both organizations for most of her collegiate career, Ell demonstrated exceptional financial stewardship and organizational skills. As a member of the Theodore Roosevelt Honors Leadership Program, she solidified her reputation as a dependable mentor and supportive leader who consistently brings enthusiasm and encouragement to those around her.

Her ability to balance academic excellence with meaningful campus involvement has made her a standout figure within the agricultural department.

Beyond her formal leadership roles, Ell is known for her positive attitude and supportive presence.

“She is someone others naturally gravitate toward for support, guidance and encouragement,” said Danielle Harper, assistant professor of agriculture. “Whether assisting fellow students, contributing to club events or taking on additional responsibilities, Shaydin approaches every task with dedication and a willingness to help.”

Driven by her passion for agriculture and her ability to inspire those around her, Ell leaves a legacy of service and leadership that will benefit the DSU community and agricultural industry for years to come.

Natalie Lile: Dedicated to rural health care and research

Natalie Lile

Natalie Lile, of Ballantine, Montana, graduates with a Bachelor of Science in biology, pre-medical, and a minor in leadership studies. Lile balanced the demands of being a dual-sport athlete in cross-country and track and field with the academic rigor of the Theodore Roosevelt Honors Leadership Program and her pre-medical coursework.

Lile’s senior research project on bacterial removal through handwashing made history at DSU by recruiting the largest group of volunteers in the school’s history, a testament to her standing within the community.

“Natalie is a fantastic example of the DSU spirit — a great all-around student, leader and athlete who is excited to contribute to her community,” Freedman Fowler said.

Following graduation, Lile will continue her work as a phlebotomist at CHI St. Alexius Health Dickinson while preparing to apply to physician assistant school. Her goal is to serve rural communities in her home state of Montana, following in the health care footsteps of her mother and grandmothers.

With her commitment to both her patients and her roots, Lile is well on her way to becoming a transformative leader in rural medicine.
