The Dickinson State University (DSU) Student Senate has endorsed adding Powerlifting as an official club sport starting in the Fall of 2024. Recognizing powerlifting's broad appeal and inclusivity within the student body, the DSU Student Senate supports the initiative spearheaded by club advisors Will and Jessica Neel.
DSU Student Senate shared the following statement following their affirmative vote, “We represent the entire student body and make decisions that we feel are in the best interest of every group on campus that make up our student population. We believe that powerlifting is going to bring a new dynamic to our campus and open doors of opportunities for many student-athletes. We are excited to see what powerlifting will do for DSU and the students.”
Powerlifting, known for its emphasis on strength and technique across three main lifts — squat, bench press, and deadlift — offers a platform for athletes of varying backgrounds and abilities to excel.
Will and Jessica Neel, proud supporters of DSU, bring a wealth of experience and passion to their roles as club advisors. With a degree in nursing from DSU, Jessica Neel embodies the spirit of giving back to the local community. Together, the Neels own and operate Pit Strength and Fitness, a renowned regional fitness establishment.
Coach Will Neel, a seasoned powerlifting competitor with 12 competitions under his belt, alongside Jessica, who will embark on her inaugural competition journey, expressed their gratitude to DSU for providing this avenue for collaboration. Jessica Neel remarked, "Thank you to DSU for giving us this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. We can't wait to watch the sport grow!"
DSU student-athlete, Dallis Mitchell, shared her enthusiasm regarding the new club sport, “I think bringing a powerlifting team to DSU is going to create many opportunities for the students who participate in it. DSU is a special place that does whatever it can to fit the needs of every single student, and I think adding a team like this is a prime example of that. Powerlifting is becoming more common within schools, and I believe this will only elevate DSU.”
The new powerlifting club will kick off its inaugural season during the 2024-2025 academic year, participating in a series of competitions, including the prestigious "Big 3" events. In these competitions, athletes will showcase their strength and technique in the squat, bench press, and deadlift disciplines, with three attempts allotted for each lift. Judges evaluate each lift based on adherence to technique and competition rules, signaling their assessment with red or white lights.
As the Neels prepare to transition to a new facility in June 2024, the DSU powerlifting club eagerly anticipates establishing itself as a formidable presence in the collegiate powerlifting circuit. Students interested in participating in this club can contact Kyle Smith at kyle.smith@dickinsonstate.edu. Information will also be available at the upcoming King of the North Contest being held on Saturday, April 20, 2024, at the Pit in Dickinson, and on dsubluehawks.com.
