Dickinson State University (DSU) will host a book talk featuring Dr. Christopher J. Olson’s Mystery Science Theater 3000: A Cultural History on Feb. 13 at 6:00 p.m. in Klinefelter Hall, Beck Auditorium. The event is open to DSU students, alumni, and the community.

Olson’s book provides an in-depth exploration of the show’s comedic legacy and its broader cultural impact. Mystery Science Theater 3000 (MST3K), a cult classic known for its satirical take on low-budget science fiction and horror films, has captivated audiences for decades with its unique blend of humor and social commentary.

The book talk will examine the origins of MST3K, tracing its development from a local Minneapolis public access program to a nationally recognized phenomenon. It will also explore the show’s influence on comedy, film criticism, and society’s evolving relationship with “bad” movies. Additionally, Olson will discuss the enduring legacy of MST3K, highlighting its continued popularity through streaming platforms, live tours, and a dedicated fan base.

The event will offer attendees the opportunity to engage with Olson’s analysis of one of television's most beloved cult series. Event information can be found here.
