The Dickinson State University Heritage Foundation has received national recognition from the National Association of Government Communicators (NAGC), earning First Place in the Publications Magazine category of the prestigious Blue Pencil and Gold Screen Awards.

The honor was announced during NAGC’s annual awards ceremony held May 21 at the Sheraton Pittsburgh Hotel at Station Square.

DSU’s award-winning submission, The Heritage Magazine for Alumni and Friends, highlights the achievements, milestones, and impact of the university’s alumni. Through engaging stories, compelling visuals, and thoughtful editorial direction, the magazine not only celebrates the Blue Hawk community but also encourages ongoing support for educational philanthropy.

This marks the second major recognition for The Heritage Magazine in 2025. Earlier this month, the magazine received a first-place award from the North Dakota Professional Communicators (NDPC), adding to its growing reputation for excellence in storytelling and design.

Contributors to the winning publication include Debora Dragseth, Baker Boy Professor of Leadership Emerita (writer and editor), Scooter Pursley (writer and editor), and Sarah Selle of Quality Quick Print (designer).

“We are incredibly proud to be recognized alongside esteemed institutions such as the Smithsonian American Women’s History Museum, the New York City Department of Transportation, and the Library of Congress,” said Debora Dragseth. “This award reflects our commitment to telling the inspiring stories of our alumni and their enduring connection to Dickinson State.”

NAGC President Leslie Gervasio praised this year’s award recipients, noting, “These honorees have demonstrated the highest standards of excellence in public service messaging. Their work exemplifies the power of clear, creative, and impactful communication.”

The Blue Pencil and Gold Screen Awards honor superior government communication products and the professionals behind them. NAGC is a nonprofit professional association dedicated to advancing the practice of government communications. The organization offers training, networking, and recognition for communicators across all levels of government.

In addition to their work on The Heritage Magazine, Dragseth, Pursley, and Selle are currently collaborating with Jim Dahl on the forthcoming book celebrating DSU’s football legacy: 100 Years of DSU Football.
