Dickinson State University (DSU) is proud to announce the hiring of Dr. Thomas Schwartz, Ph.D., as the new Head Coach of the Blue Hawk Cross Country team and Assistant Professor of Kinesiology within the School of Professional Studies. Start date is August 1, 2025.
Dr. Schwartz joins DSU with a distinguished background in both competitive coaching and academic instruction. A nationally respected endurance coach and scholar, Schwartz has coached five national champions, multiple U.S. Olympic Trials qualifiers, and numerous age-group world record holders. He holds the highest international credential available for endurance coaching—World Athletics Level 5 Elite Endurance Coach—and is certified through USA Track & Field at Levels I, II, and III. He also serves as a USATF Instructor.
“Dr. Schwartz brings an unparalleled blend of elite coaching success and academic depth to our campus,” said DSU President Scott Molander. “His presence strengthens our student-athlete experience and enhances our exercise science and kinesiology offerings.”
“Dr. Schwartz’s appointment reflects our commitment to excellence across both academics and athletics,” said Dr. Holly Gruhlke, Vice President of Academic Affairs and Provost. “His proven ability to lead and inspire—whether in the classroom or on the course—will benefit not only our exercise science students but also the broader campus community. We are thrilled to welcome him to Dickinson State.”
In addition to his coaching credentials, Schwartz holds a Ph.D. in Health and Human Performance (Exercise Science) from Concordia University Chicago and a Master of Science in Human Performance from the University of Wisconsin–La Crosse. He is also a Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist through the National Strength & Conditioning Association and has extensive teaching experience in exercise science, physical education, and human performance assessment.
A co-author of the internationally recognized training guide Build Your Running Body, Dr. Schwartz is also known for his acclaimed educational videos on distance training principles, including Critical Velocity Training.
“I’m honored to join Dickinson State University as Head Cross Country and Track Distance Coach and Assistant Professor of Kinesiology," said Dr. Schwartz. “I’m excited to build a high-performing, team-oriented culture that reflects the values of the Blue Hawks—hard work, academic discipline, and character. This is a program and a department with tremendous potential, and I’m committed to helping our student-athletes excel both on the course and in the classroom. Together, we’ll build something truly special—something that lasts.”
Dr. Schwartz will assume his dual role ahead of the fall semester. A campus and community meet-and-greet will be announced in the coming weeks.
