Dickinson State University (DSU) has announced the creation of a new position aimed at advancing campus digitization and operational efficiency. Josh Nichols, a DSU alumnus and 18-year employee of the university, has been appointed as the first Director of Digital Process Improvement.
The role supports the North Dakota University System’s (NDUS) Envision 2035 strategic plan, a long-term initiative designed to position North Dakota’s public colleges and universities for the future. Among its key priorities is the modernization of campus operations through digital transformation, data-driven decision-making, and improved access to information across institutions.
As Director of Digital Process Improvement, Nichols will lead efforts to enhance institutional workflows through digital solutions. His responsibilities include documenting and designing end-to-end processes for key university functions, creating an inventory of software used by each department, and reviewing associated costs and agreements.
“We’re committed to improving efficiency and transparency across all departments,” said Leslie Wiestock, vice president for finance and administration. “The Director of Digital Process Improvement will help us streamline our systems and make data more accessible and useful for everyone on campus.”
Nichols will work closely with Information Technology Services, software vendors, and contractors to ensure systems enable seamless data exchange and align with operational needs. He will also facilitate meetings between departments and stakeholders to identify data challenges and match needs with technical capabilities.
“This position is a vital step in modernizing the way we work and serve our students,” said DSU President Scott Molander. “Josh’s deep understanding of our campus and operations makes him the ideal person to lead this important initiative.”
Nichols, who previously held roles in student affairs and university relations, said he’s honored to step into this new position.
“As a DSU graduate and long-time employee, I care deeply about the university and its future,” Nichols said. “I’m excited to take on this role and help improve the systems and processes that support our students, faculty, and staff every day.”
The position was created to ensure consistency, clarity, and accessibility across DSU’s digital processes, ultimately improving the user experience for the entire campus community.
