For Parker Buckley, a senior majoring in Physical and Health Education, choosing Dickinson State University (DSU) was about more than academics. It was a decision shaped by family legacy, new opportunities, and a strong desire to give back.

Originally from Glendive, Montana, Buckley was drawn to DSU through a combination of family connections and personal goals. His father, a proud DSU alumnus, already had relationships on campus that helped ease the transition. Buckley also came to play football and to be part of the university’s well-regarded education program. The affordability of DSU was another key factor in his decision.

“My dad was a big reason why I decided to go into education,” Buckley said. “He has been a teacher all my life and I’ve seen the impact he’s had on so many of his students. He taught them more than just the material, he taught them how to be good people.” Inspired by that example, Buckley hopes to become the kind of educator who makes a lasting difference in the lives of his students and his community.

During his time at DSU, Buckley embraced a variety of leadership roles. He is a Theodore Roosevelt Honors student and a Senior Resident Assistant. He also served as a student assistant for the Blue Hawk football team after playing during his first two years.

One of his favorite memories is the Hawk Talk and the Hawk Walk on football game days. The Hawk Walk is a cherished experience for players, which includes walking through the tailgates after a pep talk from a DSU alum, a memory Buckley shared that is unforgettable. The energy from the community and the inspiring words shared created a sense of pride and motivation that left a lasting impression.

Buckley says it is difficult to name just one person who made a difference during his college career. Faculty and staff from the education program, his supervisors in Resident Life, his honors program directors, and his coaches and advisors all contributed to his growth. He credits their support for helping shape him into the leader and future educator he is today.

“I wouldn’t be where I am today without the support of my friends, family, and everyone I have crossed paths within the Dickinson community,” said Buckley. “Thank you, all.”

As he prepares for graduation, Buckley carries with him the lessons, values, and memories he gained at DSU. With a heart for service and a passion for teaching, he is ready to step into the classroom and make a difference, just like those who inspired him.
