Mikayla Jardine, a nursing major from Renton, Washington, is pursuing a demanding academic path in Dickinson State University’s School of Education while competing on the women’s wrestling team.

Inspired by helping her family through medical challenges, Jardine chose nursing as a way to support others during some of their most difficult moments. That experience shaped both her academic goals and her desire to serve.

“I wanted to help people the way my family was helped,” she said.

Balancing coursework, clinicals and athletics requires careful planning and discipline. Rather than leaving her schedule to chance, Jardine builds structure into her days by planning ahead and staying organized.

When asked how she balances being a student, an athlete and a nursing major, Jardine points to organization. “I have a planner that I write EVERYTHING in,” she said.

Wrestling has also influenced how Jardine approaches her nursing studies. The sport has taught her consistency and resilience, lessons she applies beyond competition. “Wrestling has taught me to be consistent when things are hard and to show up even when I don’t want to,” she said.

Jardine is most proud of completing the licensed practical nurse program, a milestone that reflects her commitment to her education. After graduating in spring 2027, she plans to return to Washington and pursue a career in public health, with an interest in working with underserved populations through free clinics or community health programs.
