Meet Joey Oliver, a third-year nursing student from Olympia, Washington.
From his first visit, Oliver knew Dickinson State University’s (DSU) nursing program was the perfect fit for his career goals. DSU offered him the chance to continue wrestling at a collegiate level while pursuing his nursing degree. Drawn to the small class sizes, supportive campus community, and welcoming faces, Oliver felt at home right away.
Inspired by his grandmother, a dedicated nurse, Oliver hopes to carry on her legacy of service through his own career. “I have a chance to make a positive difference in this world through my profession,” he shared. With strong interests in anatomy, science, and psychology, nursing has allowed Oliver to turn his passions into purpose.
Hands-on experience during clinicals has been one of the most rewarding parts of his journey, with this year’s clinicals led by instructor Tracie O’Donnell. Oliver credits her teaching with shaping his growth and success as a student nurse.
Outside of the classroom, Oliver is actively involved in the Nursing Student Association (NSA), where he participates in professional development and community outreach activities. He is also a dedicated member of the DSU wrestling team, balancing athletics with his academic responsibilities.
Reflecting on his DSU experience, Oliver feels confident he made the right choice, grateful for his professors and friendships that will last a lifetime. “No matter what, I always have a home at DSU,” he said. “I’ll always be proud to call myself a Blue Hawk for the rest of my life.”
After graduation, Oliver plans to stay in the Dickinson area as a Registered Nurse (RN) in the surgical field, where he looks forward to meeting new patients and applying the critical thinking skills he gained at DSU.
