For 25 years, one faculty member has bridged the gap between complex equations and student success at Dickinson State University (DSU). A proud alumna originally from Glendive, Montana, Shawna Egli returned to her roots to inspire the next generation of problem-solvers in mathematics and computer science.
Driven by the positive experience she had earning her undergraduate degree at DSU, Egli has dedicated her career to the institution. After four years teaching technology in Regent, North Dakota, and serving as a learning and technology coordinator for the DSU TRIO Program, she earned a master’s degree in mathematics education from Minot State University before stepping into her current role as a versatile instructor.
“Every day I get to interact with students about ideas, problems and possible solutions,” Egli said. “It is fascinating to explore the different ways math, computer science and emerging technology can be applied in the fields our students are studying.”
Beyond the classroom, Egli is a champion for youth STEM education, serving as coordinator for the MATHCOUNTS Foundation Stark County chapter competition. The annual event, hosted by DSU, challenges sixth- through eighth-grade students to develop creative problem-solving and collaboration skills through four rigorous rounds of math questions.
This year’s competition is scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 12, at the DSU Student Center Ballroom. Five local schools will compete: Beach School District, Dickinson Middle School, Galva School, Hope Christian Academy and Trinity Junior High.
“Shawna Egli brings her joyful enthusiasm to organizing a great MATHCOUNTS competition every year,” said Dr. Liz Freedman Fowler, dean of the School of Applied Sciences. “I participated in MATHCOUNTS when I was in middle school, and it was instrumental in encouraging my love of math and science. I’m glad we can share that experience with local students.”
When she is not fostering mathematical excellence, Egli finds balance on her farm near New Salem, North Dakota. A dedicated animal lover, she spends her time caring for a herd of rescued miniature ponies and her newest addition, a horse named Chico.
