In December 2023, at Dickinson State University’s Heritage Foundation Yuletyme event, Alex Fransen (’22), a former Theodore Roosevelt Honors Leadership Program scholar and Blue Hawk football player, made a winning bid on Kaitlyn McColly’s Team USA jersey. Kaitlyn, a standout DSU track and field athlete, had worn the jersey while representing the United States in the heptathlon at the 2023 World University Games in Chengdu, China.

Over the 2023 Christmas break, Alex attended the Hinsdale High School “Belly Bump” and alumni basketball tournament. During the event, he presented the jersey as a gift to Hinsdale Public Schools, giving it a meaningful home. By chance, Kaitlyn was refereeing the tournament and was able to receive her jersey directly from Alex. The moment was made even more special by the presence of Hinsdale’s Athletic Director, Haakon Fredrickson, and Glasgow’s Athletic Director, Brenner Flatten, both DSU alumni. Kaitlyn’s jersey is now displayed in the school she attended from kindergarten through 12th grade.

Alex currently teaches seventh-grade geography. He also coaches junior high football and basketball, ninth-grade baseball, and recently became the head coach for Glasgow’s Legion Baseball Team. His dedication to shaping young lives and fostering community values reflects the very best of DSU’s mission.

As the 2024 Yuletime event approaches on December 14, this story serves as a reminder of the power of community and the magic that unfolds when Blue Hawks come together. Dickinson State University’s Acting President, Ty Orton said, “Alex’s actions last year highlight the impact that can come from a single act of generosity, inspiring all of us to carry that same spirit into this year’s celebration.”

Alex and Kaitlyn’s story is a testament to the power of community, sportsmanship, and Blue Hawk pride.
